What Is A Voice Writer?

A voice writer is a court reporter who takes down the record by speaking into a stenomask. Every word is taken down verbatim in realtime, along with speaker tags, punctuation codes and formatting codes. Nationally certified voice writers (Certified Verbatim Reporters) take down the record at over 225 words per minute, whether it be during voir dire, examination, or jury charge. Voice writers maintain their certification by participating in Continuing Education Units.

Voice writing has many applications across communication and information access, such as producing realtime transcripts, broadcast captioning, and classroom seminars/lectures.
